Retrograde

Phenomena

Retrograde is the apparent backward motion of a planet across the sky, seen from Earth. It is an optical effect of orbital geometry — Earth and the other planet moving at different speeds — not a real reversal. "Mercury retrograde" is the best-known example.

Astrologers read a retrograde planet as turning its energy inward or delaying its themes; astronomically, every planet appears to retrograde periodically.
