Runes are the letters of the old Germanic alphabets, the earliest being the Elder Futhark of twenty-four characters, in use from around the 2nd century AD. They were writing, but also carried power over fate (wyrd) and were used for divination. The "runic astrology" of birth-runes sold today, however, is a modern construction, not a Viking practice.
