Flicker

Flicker

People born under the Strong Sun Moon, the first moon of Shawnodese, the Spirit Keeper of the South, have the flicker as their animal totem, the wild rose as their plant and carnelian agate as their mineral. Their color is the pink of the rose and of the flicker, and they belong to the Frog clan.

Personality

Flicker people are very home-oriented. Like carnelian, they are slow to accept new ideas but solid in them once they do; when a Flicker decides that he or she loves you, that love is solid and stable. They are intuitive and latently mystical — more logical people may find them sloppy, irrational thinkers — and they need a larger group to serve, often one with religious or mystical leanings. Out of balance, like an untended wild rose, they can become slothful and lost in undeveloped emotions.

Love & Relationships

Relationship is very important to them. They often have a house full of children, their own mixed with the neighborhood’s, and they find it hard to let their children leave the nest.

Health & Wellbeing

The book links them to the spleen, the breast and the stomach; the heart can be weakened by an indiscriminate outpouring of love, and internal disorders can come when the blood does not flow as it should.

Mythology & Symbolism

The flicker belongs to the woodpecker family; the book retells the Roman myth of Picus, turned into a woodpecker by Circe. Native legend says the flicker has red wings because it flew too close to a fire set by the Earthquake Spirit while trying to put it out; its drumming is the beat of the heart and of the earth, and flicker feathers worn in the hair mark a member of a medicine society.
