Earthly Branches

Chinese

The twelve Earthly Branches (地支) are an ancient Chinese system for counting time in twelves, reaching back to the Shang dynasty. They came first; the familiar twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac were attached to them later as a memorable face. Paired with the ten Heavenly Stems, they form the sixty-year sexagenary cycle.
